In a historic feat, a fleet of 11 sailboats, participants of the 2023-2024 Clipper Race spanning the globe, successfully navigated the vast expanse of the ocean to reach the picturesque shores of Ha Long Bay. Following an arduous 25-day journey covering a staggering 4,515 nautical miles, the racing teams representing Ha Long Bay, Qingdao, Zhuhai, Bakezela, Dare To Lead, Our Isles And Oceans, Perseverance, PSP Logistics, Unicef, Washington DC, and Yacht Club Punta Del Este arrived at the Ha Long International Cruise Port on February 18 and 19.

This leg of the Clipper Race, known as Race No. 7 – the “Asia-Pacific Challenge,” commenced its voyage from the Coral Sea port in Queensland, Australia, culminating in the enchanting beauty of Ha Long Bay. The sailors were afforded a well-deserved two-week respite upon their arrival, allowing them ample time to rejuvenate and explore the breathtaking landscape before embarking on the next phase of the race.
This historic event marks the inaugural occasion where the Clipper Race’s ocean-faring vessels have graced the serene waters of Ha Long Bay, adding a new chapter to the rich tapestry of maritime endeavors.

Discovering Ha Long: Clipper Race Sailboats Explore Vietnam’s Gem
Led by British captain Josh Stickland, the racing team representing Quang Ninh province, Vietnam, known as “Ha Long Bay, Vietnam,” clinched the 5th place spot at 10:30 on February 19, temporarily securing 6th place in the Final Ranking. The exhilarating race saw the Qingdao team triumphantly cross the finish line first at 1:20 p.m. on February 18, with Zhuhai and Unicef closely following in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
Clipper Challenge: Racing Sailboats Conquer Ha Long Bay
Each vessel, including “Ha Long Bay, Vietnam,” is equipped with a small engine for port entry and exit, relying primarily on wind power from towering 32-meter masts throughout the racing journey. Kold Rich, a member of the Yacht Club Punta Del Este team, stands by one of the boat’s two rudders, vital for navigating in accordance with wind direction.
Rich reflects on the daunting challenges faced during the voyage, with winds reaching up to 40 knots and encounters with fierce storms and waterspouts. Yet, amidst the adversity, there’s a sense of solidarity and courage prevailing among the crew. Rich expresses delight at the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Ha Long Bay, a destination unfamiliar to him.

Each vessel is equipped with GPS navigation devices and lifeboat boxes capable of accommodating 12 people, ensuring safety throughout the voyage of sailboats to Ha Long Bay. Captain Stickland of “Ha Long Bay, Vietnam” finds respite in the cozy bunker bedroom, while onboard amenities, including neatly arranged bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices, optimize space efficiency.

The kitchen, located centrally, boasts ample space and utensils for meal preparation. Stickland shares insights into the team’s round-the-clock operations, with 24-hour shifts ensuring each member receives approximately 10 hours of sleep daily. The team, comprising 46 members, including 18 women, maintains a balanced diet, alternating between fresh foods and canned or dried provisions during the voyage.

Post-Ha Long Bay Itinerary for Clipper Race Sailboats
The arrival of sailboats at Ha Long Bay presents a favorable opportunity for Vietnam to promote this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Following their stay in Ha Long Bay, racing teams are afforded approximately two weeks to unwind, explore the surroundings, and engage in various exchange and experiential activities. This period serves as an opportunity for Quang Ninh Province to showcase its tourism offerings to a global audience, with a particular focus on attracting visitors from Europe, North America, and Australia.
On March 2, the teams will set sail from Ha Long Bay towards their next destination: Kyushu, Zhūhǎi City, located in Guangdong Province, China. This leg of the 2023-2024 Clipper Race features the participation of nearly 400 sailors across 11 sailboats, spanning 8 stages comprising 16 individual races and 6 challenging ocean crossings.
